How to bypass region locked content?

1 min read Updated

To bypass region-locked content, connect to a VPN server in the country where that content is licensed, then reload the service so it sees the new location.

Steps that work most often

  1. Pick a server in your home country. If you're a US subscriber in Spain, connect to a US server.
  2. Clear the old location. Clear cookies or use a private window. On phones, turn off location access for the app, since some check GPS too.
  3. Switch servers if you get an error. Streaming services block IPs linked to VPNs. Netflix shows a specific VPN or proxy error and doesn't support VPNs at all on live events or ad-supported plans.

A provider with a large server pool, such as NordVPN, gives you more IP addresses to try.

Know what you're agreeing to

Region locks come from licensing deals, not technical limits. Netflix's terms of use say content varies by location and is meant to be accessed mainly in the country where you opened the account, and the service can limit or end access if you break the terms. In practice, the usual consequence is a blocked stream, but it is a terms violation.

A legal alternative inside the EU

If you live in the EU and travel within it, you may not need a workaround. The EU portability rules require paid streaming, music, sports and e-book services to give you your home catalog, at no extra cost, while you're temporarily in another EU country. US subscribers get no such guarantee.

Region locks on games and apps are often tied to your payment card or account country, which no VPN changes. And in China, the UAE or Russia, using a VPN for foreign TV adds legal risk on top of the terms issue.
