Can I take my Amazon Fire Stick on vacation with me?

1 min read Updated

Yes. A Fire Stick works anywhere you have Wi-Fi and a TV with a free HDMI port, and Amazon says you can bring compatible Fire TV devices when you travel outside your home country. What changes is what you can watch.

What to expect abroad

  • Smaller catalogs. Prime members get only a limited selection of Prime Video titles outside their home country. Look for the "Watch While Abroad" rows. Netflix also varies by country, and titles on your list may disappear while you're away.
  • Leave your account country alone. Switching your Amazon account to another country cuts off your Prime Video purchases and rentals. Purchases come back when you switch back; rentals don't.
  • Download first. Prime Video downloads play offline, but they need a phone or tablet, not the Stick.

Hotel Wi-Fi is the usual headache

Fire TV supports captive portals (the hotel login page), but they can still fail, especially when the network ties access to a device you already signed in on. A small travel router fixes this: it logs in once and the Stick connects to your own network instead. Bring the power adapter and a short HDMI extender too, since hotel TVs are often wall-mounted with tight ports.

About VPNs

A VPN app such as NordVPN runs on most current Fire TV Sticks (3rd generation and newer), or you can run the VPN on a travel router. It encrypts traffic on shared hotel networks and gives you a US IP address. Know the rules, though: Prime Video's terms bar using technology to disguise your location, and streaming services actively block many VPN servers, so US-only content isn't guaranteed. In some countries, such as the UAE, using a VPN to reach blocked services is illegal.
