Why can't you FaceTime in Dubai?

1 min read Updated

FaceTime doesn't work in Dubai because it's an unlicensed internet calling (VoIP) service, and UAE carriers block VoIP apps that aren't approved by the telecoms regulator. FaceTime audio and FaceTime video fall under the same rule that blocks WhatsApp and consumer Skype calls.

It's a network block, not your phone

The block happens at the carrier level on du and e&, so a US iPhone with FaceTime fully enabled will still fail to connect once it's on a UAE network or hotel Wi-Fi. iMessage texting usually works, because it isn't a calling service.

Phones bought in the UAE add a second layer. iPhones sold there have historically shipped without FaceTime, and Cybernews notes that a UAE-purchased iPhone can't use FaceTime while you're in the country, though it may work after you travel elsewhere.

The brief exceptions

FaceTime has slipped through a couple of times. It worked for a while after an iOS update in 2020, and in October 2021 Associated Press reporters found FaceTime calls working in the UAE around Expo 2020, with no explanation from Apple or the regulator. Both windows closed, and in December 2020 the country's cybersecurity chief said FaceTime calls were still banned while talks continued. That's still the position as of October 2026.

What to use instead

  • Zoom or Microsoft Teams for free video calls with family in the US.
  • BOTIM, which is licensed but usually needs a paid calling pack.
  • Regular cellular calls on your US plan or a local SIM.

Trying to force FaceTime through a VPN is risky: using one to reach blocked services can draw fines under UAE cybercrime law.
